Eco-friendly + Eco-beautiful

From jute, basalt, and coffee bags, to bio-resin and repurposed woods, Milwaukee-based Greenhouse Surfboards is taking progressive steps toward showing that eco-friendly can be eco-beautiful. Of equal importance is having boards that perform. Each single fin longboard is built to not only catch waves, but also make for a fun glide in the process.

Inspired by the single fin shapes of Velzy and Jacobs, with full exploration of hulls and profiles of Simmons and Greenough, our boards pay homage to surfing’s history, with a keen eye toward its future. Below is a sampling of some of the materials that emphasize our commitment to increasingly sustainable surfboard production.

Our Materials

Jute

Jute and repurposed coffee bags from area roasters in Milwaukee has proven to be a functional and aesthetic alternative to fiberglass. Solid colorfast richness, as well as 11 oz. equivalence, jute’s ability to absorb resin and adhere to EPS foam has made for a light board, that remains as resistant to pressure dings as a traditional 6 + 6 deck glassing schedule. Other uses have been all jute fins, leash loops, as well as hybrid boards that use jute, traditional fiberglass, along with various woods and basalt fibers.

Basalt

Volcanic basalt fiber is a stunning, beautiful and effective alternative to fiberglass. Formed from igneous volcanic rock, basalt fibers react and adhere well to EPS foam and create a look unlike any other fabric. Integrating basalt into fins makes for a lighter material that carries the much needed properties of durability and improved tensile strength. We’re confident that given basalt’s unique technical and visual properties it will be the go-to fiber in the coming years of sustainable surfboard production.

Entropy Bio-Resin

Our commitment to more sustainable board production is literally wrapped up in the Entropy bio-resin we use for all our longboards. With the highest percentage of plant based materials of any resin on the market, Entropy continues to lead the way in responsible and functional surfboard production.

EPS Foam

Greenhouse Surfboards recognizes that surfing’s reliance on EPS foam presents a challenge to our continued and true-north goal of fully sustainable surfboards. Our offset efforts include ensuring that no metals or plastics are used, resulting in stunning jute, wood and basalt fins, basalt and jute leash loops, as well as nose and tail blocks made of repurposed and discarded materials. In addition, each blank is constructed in our shaping bay, and uses locally produced foam. This results in a reduced carbon footprint and ensures all materials are repurposed and feed into our local Wisconsin community.
